Thanksgiving celebrations were originally based on festivals that were held by both Europeans and Native Americans to celebrate the successful harvest for centuries. Our modern "Thanksgiving" is based on a 3 day festival held in Plymouth, MA that celebrated the successful harvest in 1621. The term Thanksgiving did not become widely used
