We would like to wish you and your families a Happy Thanksgiving. We would also like to share some information on how "Thanksgiving" evolved.
Thanksgiving celebrations were originally based on festivals that were held by both Europeans and Native Americans to celebrate the successful harvest for centuries. Our modern "Thanksgiving" is based on a 3 day festival held in Plymouth, MA that celebrated the successful harvest in 1621.
The term Thanksgiving did not become widely used until the 1830's. Thanksgiving itself was not made official until President Lincoln declared the day as a kind of thank you for Civil Wars victories and to give thanks for "general blessings".
Today we celebrate Thanksgiving as a national holiday honoring the early settlers and their harvest feast. Modern religion has turned Thanksgiving into a day of prayer and thanks to God for the many "good blessings" of the prior year. Thanksgiving has also become a day to celebrate with friend and families with a "feast" being the centerpoint of the holiday.
Today in America we have many things to be thankful for and Thanksgiving Day allows the many cultures of America to share in a common celebration to celebrate our many blessings as a people and as a nation.
